Traditionally owners can hire a residential architect or a design build contractor, neither of whom are experts in the historical context of such unique properties. As an architectural historian with a PhD from MIT and a trained architect with years of architectural practice experience, I can offer a variety of services including assessing the historic and/or architectural significance of a home, advising owners on the variety of options available in order to preserve the historical integrity of their property. Also, if you buy a home or other historic property I can work with owners to develop conceptual design solutions to accomplish their goals, as well as project management/oversight of their renovation project.
My goal is to enable owners to have pride in their historic properties by making them relevant for modern life without compromising their historic character, and ultimately adding value.
I provide tailored upfront service to get you started on your renovation project
or I can be your partner throughout the process. I mainly work in the greater Boston and Worcester area, but have consulted on jobs around New England and in Florida.
Determining what you have.
The first step is to gather information in order to find out what you own, what it means, and why it is important. My architectural consulting service includes the preparation of a full report on your property that details the historic nature of the property and its context while also giving an overview of its existing conditions. The process draws upon sources beyond the house itself including local archives. Modeled after the methods used by the National Historic American Building Survey your custom report will include a full analysis of your property in terms of its historical context and significance through a combination of text, drawings and photographs.
Once the report is complete, it is crucial to understand your needs and aspirations for enhancing your home or property, and then look at your options for moving forward. What are your ultimate goals? Should you craft a long-term plan? Are your needs more immediate? Should you hire an architect? a builder? an engineer? preservationist? We will discuss your needs and desires in order to arrive at a plan that works specifically for you.
Once we have an action-plan for enhancing your property, I can provide project management services ranging from procurement to management of all of the consultants and contractors involved through project completion. As an experienced architect and project manager, I can oversee your project from start to finish and we can work together to ensure that your goals and priorities are met. There are multiple ways in which this can be done and we will decide together what the best option is for your particular situation and work out a detailed plan.
